That is, not for me. When I attended the Toastmaster’s introductory afternoon at the Eurasian Association, I found out that Toastmaster's was a lot more than that.

Toastmaster's is a self-help public speaking course incorporating a mentor and peer support system, which is incredibly effective in building your communication skills. Toastmaster’s is also a great way to build self-confidence because of the positive, supportive way that feedback is given.

Public speaking is a skill we can all benefit from. We need it in our jobs, when we present projects or when we sell ourselves to prospective employers; and in any social situation, where we may be called upon to speak to an audience.

Research has shown that speaking in front of an audience is one of the greatest fears people have, greater than death in many cases. Which means, that at a funeral, many people would rather be the one in the coffin than give the eulogy.

I've had to speak publicly for my work and when I first started I really didn't know how to connect to the audience. Once when I gave a talk, everyone in the audience left and I had to stop speaking. But I soon got better. So I thought that I didn't need to attend Toastmaster's, and to be honest, I really didn't want to speak in front of an audience anymore than I needed to for work. It still made me nervous even though i had done it many times.

However when I heard the members of Toastmaster's speak at the introductory event, I was so impressed and entertained. I realised then that joining Toastmaster's would help me further improve my presentation skills. So I signed up.

At the first meeting, there were a few members who gave their first prepared speech and well, I have to say, I was even more impressed. I then went up to speak at the impromptu Table Topics and was voted the Best Table Topics speaker. Honestly I thought I wasn’t in with a fighting chance, with all my 'ums', 'ahs' and pauses. But I felt so encouraged and wanted to carry on, so I committed to giving my first prepared speech at the next meeting. I was voted the Best Speaker of the day for this speech as well.

As I attend more meetings and have become more involved with Toastmaster’s. I have to say, I’m even more inspired by the talent, sincerity and enthusiasm of my fellow members. We often receive feedback from guests that we have a very strong group of speakers and that they have immensely enjoyed their afternoon with us. I've also found myself feeling so much more confident, I recently acted in a docu-drama and sang at a party in front of a group of people, all of which I don't think I could have done without the new found confidence I've gained through attending Toastmaster's meetings.

I've thoroughly enjoyed my five months of being a Toastmaster. Especially meeting all the people I have. It is my hope that as the Toastmaster’s club at the Eurasian Association continues to grow we garner more support, not only from Eurasians, but also from our peers that want to be a part of a support group and community of individuals dedicated to improving themselves.

I invite you all to come along to our Club’s Chapter meetings the first and third Saturday of each month and look forward to meeting you.

Michelle Ayn Tessensohn
Treasurer
Executive Committee
The Eurasian Association Toastmaster’s Club

The Christmas Championship

Christmas is just about the most important celebration of the year for Eurasians.
